What are hastags' primary use

If you wondered what a hashtag is after reading the heading, what have you been doing with your spare time man. Have you never used the internet? 

The next little bit is for the noobs, so if you already know what hashtags are, just keep scrolling down to the bright red heading

So new comers, hashtags were like the dewey decimal system (you should know what that is, because if you didnt use the internet, you must've been at the library) for the internet. It was originally used as a way to organize topics on social media. This new tool was first used in IRC, an ancient version of online messaging. Today, it is widely used by many to show their emotions, and spread information at rapid speeds, but it is mainly used to stay in trend to look cool

So we know that most people use hashtags as a way to stay in trend, but there have been quite a few instances where they were used to change lives. Just look at the list below:

• #Bringbackourgirls
• #Icebucketchallenge
• #Blacklivesmatter

I could go on and on, but these 3 did the most change in people's lives. These were examples of activism, when people would put their lives on the line to change whatever it is they want to change.

Now you may think that hastags are a very good thing, but that is far from the truth. These are maybe 1/2000 (Im just guessing, don't kill me for saying wrong stats) of all the hashtags that happen in a year. What are all the other hashtags for? Well its mainly used to look cool, like I said in the noobs section, also known as slacktivism, when you just copy and paste the newest trend. Since I've gave you examples of activism hashtags, here are some slactivism hashtags:

• #Girllove

Like what even, why do you need so many hashtags????

Overall, I believe that hashtags is a form of slacktivism. I know there are cases where it was activism but that's like everything, there will be good things but the bad out weighs it all. If you truly are an activist, you need to physcially stand for days and prove to others that this is an important cause for which I would loose my life to make do.

I totally agree with Captain Picard, this is honestly why aliens wont visit us, we create such useless ways of communication which turns into a popularity contest, smh..

Just have to hope the next generation, or even our generation (if you're 16/17) changes to leave useless ideas in the trash
