FoMO:Is it a thing??

These days, especially when we are learning this unit, I often think about that do I make frequent use of social media? Because I find that I seldom or never miss the moments that my friends post on the social media or the messages from anyone, which means that I refresh the social media every hour.Sometimes after few hours work, the first thing I do is open my social media.

This phenomenon is already happened to me quite a long time, but the thing that makes me thinking is this phenomenon has been specifically described in terms: FoMO-fear of missing out.

In short, this phenomenon thinks that people are afraid of missing some of the rewarding experiences around themselves and eager to learn the experience of others in order to keep in touch with others.

Let’s take the quiz first.

As expected, my result was really high.

Nowadays, we are in a era that social media is so advanced which directly led people spending more time on social media — social media engagement.

Przybylski, A.K’s team already analyzed the related psychological motivations , emotional , behaviors of the FoMO phenomenon.

    And the results showed that:

1.FoMO has a negative correlated with age, younger people usually have higher FoMO.

2.On the psychological motivation aspect: FoMO has a negative correlation with psychological satisfaction; and also life satisfaction is significant negative correlation

3.As for emotion : FoMO matters positive emotions and negative emotions. This is a very interesting result , apparently that the moods of high-FoMO people are very unstable and full of contradictions .

4. At last, the behavior, people who have high FoMO, are also trending to distract in class .

And the latter studies have found that the more frequent use of mobile phones , the GPA and the life satisfaction during colleges or universities are lower. And the Facebook has a significant impact on learning behavior— distracting people’s attentions most. However the texts and e-mail do not have an obvious impact on learning.

OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS? SUCH MANY BAD CONSEQUENCES?DON’T SCARE PEOPLE PLEASE?

In spite of the quiz or the study results or the consequences of FoMO, the purpose is single: persuade people that do not addict to the Internet. However, we are scared by these kind of news and quizzes heaps of times. We are immune already…..
