Hank Green Talks About the Internet!

I think john and hank green are possibly the best thing that has ever come out of media in the history of forever. Honestly instead of having to go to school everyday for the first eighteen years of your life there should just be mandatory viewing of their videos and everyone would learn a whole lot more AND have a whole lot more fun too.

Not just that, but they’re probably the best role model for basically anyone.

They have a YouTube channel where they make videos about really cool and interesting topics about absolutely everything you never knew you needed to know about. From crash courses in Chemistry to the Greek economy or Brazilian Politics. They managed to make these incredibly mundane topics interesting to 12 to 18 year olds in a way that schools STILL ARE UNABLE TO DO.

In this Particular video, Hank green analyses the use of the internet and its affects to him and to society as a whole.

In his nervous rant about Vidcon he critics whether the internet is in fact good for humanity. He tries use an informative tone throughout the video to effectively analyse how the internet is affecting us, and the impacts of it to the media, communities in our society, and culture. He critics the internet about its ability to help people learn and states, “the internet is extremely effective at creating pockets of bias and misinformation” and “Online culture is going to become mainstream culture”. But he also talks about how it has the power to make us more tolerate of people with different cultural perspectives than us, and make us more aware about the issues in other places of the world simply by making it more visible in our own life.

And that’s EXACTLY WHAT Vlogbrothers do with their videos. For example, in this similar video

Hank Green talks about the Millennium Development Goals and tries to persuade the viewers to care about these goals in the way, that he argues, that they deserve to be cared about.  He gets angry! That there’s so much more good that people NEED to be doing and so many more changes that NEED to be implemented. and he makes this video all the more better with his oddly unique sense of humour mixed in with informative sophisticated words to make the viewers believe (and keep their attention) that this is a serious topic that needs our consideration. Over here he again tells the viewers to share this with as many people as possible through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; trying to get them to use the internet to its full advantage of getting this information across. He uses the internet to bring information and knowledge in a creative and entertaining way to a whole bunch of people that wouldn’t know the first thing about these goals (other than the vague memory of sleeping through that socials class when we supposedly discussed these).
.

Through these videos, John and Hank Green make the internet ‘Good for humanity’. Proving Hank Green’s point in the earlier video.

They start these videos similar to a letter with “Good morning John it’s Tuesday” or “Dear Hank” and make the content resemble simple conversation between brothers. This way, with a lighthearted tone, it encourages the viewers to participate in these topics similar to how they would react to an open discussion. And not surprisingly, that’s exactly what they do.

We all know the horrors of YouTube Comments (if not, go check out http://runt-of-the-web.com/worst-youtube-comments [you absolutely will regret checking this link out pls don’t unless you want to loose all your faith in humanity and go cry in your room for ten hours wondering why you had to be born in the era of the internet and then finally drag yourself up realising you still need to finish your blog + 2 more and now you’re ten hours behind])

[but worry not. I shall restore your faith soon]

Because in these videos’ comments you’ll be surprised to see that a lot of the comments are actually...profound? and they’re on the verge of being an opinion you might actually want to pay attention to.

Hank Green brought out that reaction in people to care about what they post on the internet and how to use it for our benefit.

Anyway, what do you think? Do you agree that the internet can be good for humanity through these types of videos or other learning sites similar? And is the amount of people using the internet for ‘good’ enough to balance out the people who use it like a big black pit people fall into when they can’t sleep at night and have nothing better to do?
