Informal phrases or so-called "slang" have long existed before you and I were born. For many decades, slang was viewed as the language for the poor and uneducated, and it also indicated a person's status, wealth, and power.
However, as we step into the twenty-first century, the blossom of the social media via internet has given birth to a whole new breed of slang. The INTERSLANG. This new language is mostly accepted and live around the younger generation. Why? Let me explain the reasons behind the mysterious attraction of this new slang into three parts.
The first part of the reason that the Interslang is more preferable among the young people is because it's fast and simple to use. At the beginning, when unlimited texting was not a thing, people would type as short as possible to be more economical. But then they started to use Interslang in their life. Moreover, their style of communication has changed because of this. Well, I mean, who doesn't like to express themselves in the simplest and quickest way possible? As a result, many people, including me, have adapted into this MEDIOCRE lifestyle.
The second part of the reason that we use Interslang ALOT is that it's FUNNY. Yes the Interslang is freaking hilarious! Words like "lol", "fam", "lmao", "g2g", "jk", are constantly throwing up by us because they excite us, and the formal versions just cannot give us the right feeling. For example, if I reply back to a joke from my buddy with "laugh out loud" instead of "lol", the effect would be different. First, everyone would be expected to use "lol", not "laugh out loud". Second, the word "lol" has a funny effect when a person sees it, and "laugh out loud" doesn't.
And that brings us to the third part of the reason why is Interslang so popular. It's because of peel pressure. Like many other people, you want to feel involved in this new way of communicating so you must use them too. Moreover, you don't want to be getting pick on for being lame...Alternatively, someone would tell you that "you must be fun at parties," if you use "get to go" instead of "g2g".
Social media dominates us in a variety of ways, and Interslang is one of them. It influences how we interact with each other not only through the internet but everyday life. Then again, it's the creation of this new language a good thing or bad thing? I think it's perfectly normal that our language evolves, and Interslang is just a small foot step of the evolution of the human language. Who knows what our language is going to be like in a thousand years?
