Is
the Internet dumbing us down and making us lazier? Or is it empowering the
masses by giving access to more information?
Well,
first off lets just put it out there that I am a very lazy person. But I wouldn’t say the internet is to blame
for that. As far as dumb goes, I
wouldn’t blame the internet for that either.
Lets
take a more general look though, because who’s really interested in me.
First
lets talk about whether or not the internet “dumbs us down”.
Is
it true that we can use the internet to cheat, not learn things and fill our
minds with useless ads, comments, commercials, photos, videos, etc.? Yes. Absolutely.
BUT isn’t it also true that we can use the internet as a tool to find
and share new information, and inspire passion and interest in learning new
things? YES! The internet can be used to
diminish your brain, or develop it. The
choice is yours.
So,
depending on how you use the internet, it can either dumb you down or smarten you right up.
Now
since we came to such a decisive conclusion about whether or not the internet
is dumbing us down, lets take a look at laziness.
Some
people use the internet to their lazy advantage. Don’t want to get up and do groceries or go
shopping? Well, now you can do all that in
your PJ’s, from the comfort of your own bed, whilst binge watching Friends, and
have it all delivered right to your front door.
Lazier? Obviously. BUT there are people who use these internet services
to actually make their lives more convenient, not just because they can’t get
their lazy butts off the couch.
Some
people have super busy lives and being able to do some of these things online
genuinely makes their lives a heck of a lot easier and less stressful. There’s only so much time in a day, so
cutting the hour+ long grocery trip down to 20 minutes online can be incredibly
helpful. Plus, then you don’t have to
worry about little kids, if you have them, running around in a grocery store asking for literally every single piece of junk food they see,
because we all know that is never a good time for anyone.
So,
another super decisive conclusion, whether or not the internet makes you lazier
depends on how you use it.
Yes. 100%.
Is
it empowering us by giving us access to information?
Yes. 100%.
Information
is knowledge.
Knowledge is power. – some old guy someone thought was smart (jokes
it was Sir Francis Bacon)
The
internet is the source for
information today. Without it, most people wouldn't know anything about anything not immediately presented to
them. The knowledge and information we get
from the internet empowers us to learn new things, spark change, start
discussions, help those in need, create, innovate, and so much more.
The
internet has given us the power to do things we never could before; it is
empowering us through information.
