In my personal opinion, I think that both sides of the argument are represented. Both sides have different factors that are just as convincing as each other.
I think that we can use the Internet in multiple ways, but we can also be used by it in multiple ways. It can become a job for some while we can become the money for the men in jobs at these big corporations. I'm sure we'd like to think that we have the power, with our natural subconscious feeling that we are superior over a piece of plastic computer.
But there are people behind the screen that make it the powerful thing that it has become.
No one wants to admit that they've lost control, but maybe the Internet IS using us.
1.USING US
A teacher made an experiment via Facebook to show her students how quickly something they post can be transmitted world wide for people to see. Many users of Facebook, especially the younger ones, are either not aware or they do not care about their privacy settings. This directly relates to Text #6, where these big companies and websites make money directly off of their users.
But how? How are we letting them use us just to make more money? Well, it's something that we don't even realize we are doing. They embed it in their programs that we use every single day.
2. USING THEM
Some might say that we are being used by corporations but some people have used Youtube and its many active viewers to create a job and life. Famous "Youtubers", as they are called, have built a fan base with either their talents or personalities that are shown through their content.
The content that they chose to upload ended up skyrocketing them into the position where they can make money off of it. In this way, they used the Internet to create a life and create a platform for information.
3.USING US
These online stores and shops want to advertise themselves as "cheap" and "stylish," for those who do not have the time or resources to go shop in stores.
But most of the time, these websites are not reliable because their content sent to you does not always match up with what you originally ordered, in quality and value.
They use these ridiculously beautiful ads to make us click on their product to buy. But when these websites are not always 100% reliable, we are putting our trust into something that we don't know for sure.
4.USING US
Creating the perfect Instragram feed has become an odd obsession for social media starlets and those underneath. The Internet and what its portrayal of perfection has us worrying to a concerning extent about our instragram and how we present ourselves with these photos.
Based on celebrities like Kylie Jenner or Selena Gomez, who share their "perfect life" on these social media platforms, it has made us have this need for the likes. We give the companies this opportunity to make money based on our need to feel validated on social media.
The more followers, the more likes, the more comments. It's become a necessary thing in our everyday lives. And because of this change in our society, we are uploading more and giving the power to the companies.
5. USING IT
Some people really do enjoy the Internet and what it has to offer. Technology can be new and exciting and help with many things. This comic is specifically talking about Facebook and the many games they have to offer.
But if you relate it to the Internet as a whole, it shows how the public think of the Internet as an exciting resource that we have to use for our pleasure. This obviously boils down to personal opinion and what you believe about the Internet.
But, especially with the teens of this day and age and those moms that update everythingggggg on Facebook, some would definitely say that the Internet has a positive impact on their lives.
Whether they use it as a sense of pleasure and fun or for something serious like research for a job, many find the Internet to be a platform of information and connections.
6. USING US
Not everyone on the Internet thinks that the Internet is as lovely or as valuable as the people represented in comic 5.
This blog showed us how popular social hubs like Twitter and Facebook use their users to gain money and profit. This article showed to us that these websites may not be as trustworthy as we think.
Since they use us as a source of money, it only makes sense for us to be a little confused as to how. They try to make it as subtle as they can, so no one suspects anything out of the ordinary. Meanwhile, they are making dollar after dollar on every post or like we do.
So, really, the choice is up to you.
Are we using the internet or is the internet using us?
